Plant Clinic and Pesticide Awareness Campaigns Held in Dailekh and Kanchapur

A plant clinic was conducted in Dailekh, where various diseased plant samples were examined. The clinic identified significant issues such as fruit fly infestations, fusarium wilt, mosaic viruses, leaf curl diseases, and cases of poor crop management. These efforts aimed to diagnose and address critical plant health concerns in different agricultural regions. A total of 45 farmers participated in the clinic.

In addition, an awareness campaign on pesticide use was held in Kanchapur, with 46 farmers actively participating. The primary objective of this event was to promote Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, aiming to reduce pesticide use and protect soil health and the environment.

Both campaigns received support from local governments and community leaders, highlighting the importance of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation for future generations.

Community Seed Bank Management Training Organized by Caritas Nepal in Nawalpur

Caritas Nepal, with technical support and facilitation from LI-BIRD, organized a Community Seed Bank Management Training from December 15-17, 2024, in Gaidakot, Nawalpur. The training targeted project staff and aimed to enhance local agricultural practices by identifying key local crops and strategies for their conservation and promotion.

The initiative also focused on recognizing Custodian Farmers in the project areas and empowering them to conserve, manage, and protect these local seed varieties for future generations. Through this effort, Caritas Nepal seeks to foster sustainable farming practices, promote agro-biodiversity, and ensure the resilience of local communities by preserving valuable indigenous seeds.

Three-Day Training for Lead Farmers Held in Nawalpur

A three-day training for 26 lead farmers from homestead and enterprise groups across five districts was organized from December 9-11, 2024, at Botey Majhi Community Homestay in Keuraney, Devchuli, Nawalpur. The training focused on the crucial roles of lead farmers at both the group and community levels.

Key topics covered included marketing strategies, annual planning, vermicomposting, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, and more. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of lead farmers to effectively support their communities, improve agricultural productivity, and promote sustainable farming practices. Participants gained valuable insights into leadership, community engagement, and innovative agricultural techniques.

NLRP-II Program Organizes Cross-Learning Visit and Business Plan Training

The NLRP-II program organized a two-day cross-learning visit on December 4th and 5th, 2024, in Banke. A total of 28 participants, including members from the enterprise group, Chisapani Agriculture Cooperative Ltd., and representatives from homestead groups in Baijanath Rural Municipality-1, took part in the visit.

The group visited Nava Pragati Mahila Krishi Sahakari and the Agriculture Enterprise of Krishnapur Municipality in Kanchanpur, Samjhauta Multipurpose Cooperative of Belauri Municipality, Kanchanpur, and Aguwa Agriculture Cooperative Ltd. Participants also observed banana farming sites, visited seed companies, and learned about an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) group in Rajapur Municipality, Bardiya. The primary objective of the visit was to facilitate knowledge sharing and expose participants to successful agricultural practices and cooperative models.

Additionally, a two-day business plan training for the establishment of a Kaurey honey processing center was completed in Rupa-7, Kaski. Participants developed a comprehensive business plan covering production planning, market analysis, and financial estimation. This training enhanced their skills and knowledge, equipping them to establish a successful honey processing enterprise.

NLRP-II Supports Capacity Building for 11 Cooperatives Across 10 Districts

NLRP-II has been supporting 11 cooperatives across 10 districts by providing various capacity-building training to their working committees and staff. Technical advice is also being offered on cooperative management, accounting, safeguarding, and policy handling.

Recent training initiatives include a Loan Risk Management training conducted in collaboration with Rajapur Municipality in Banke, where 56 cooperative leaders and staff members participated. Additionally, a Cooperative Management Training was held in December in Laljhadi-2, Kanchanpur, with 28 participants. A semi-annual and annual review of the Sisautar Women’s Saving & Credit Cooperative in Lalitpur was also conducted, including a PEARLS analysis with working committees, managers, and staff.

Moreover, a Help Desk meeting was organized by Sisautar Women’s Saving and Credit Cooperative on December 8, 2024, in Ghusel, Lalitpur. An orientation on safeguarding and complaint handling systems was also held at Bijayata WD M. Coop and Aguwa Agriculture Cooperative Ltd. (Rajapur-6 and 10). The orientation program was attended by cooperative leaders, ward representatives, and leaders of women’s and PWD networks.

NLRP-II Supports 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

In support of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (November 25th – December 10th), the NLRP-II program team collaborated with supported cooperatives in Lalitpur, Nawalpur, Banke, Jhapa, and Dailekh. Together with local governments and other stakeholders, awareness programs were organized under the slogan “Our Commitment to End Gender-Based Violence: Solidarity.”

In Nawalpur, Inspector Bindu B.K. Jr. (District Police Office, Kawasoti) and Police Prabin Majhi (Tikabhairav Police Office) conducted insightful sessions. Three dedicated social volunteers from Kawasoti ward were honored. Approximately 220 individuals participated in the program.

In Baijanath Rural Municipality, Chisapani, a rally and interaction event were organized on the final day of the 16 Days of Activism. Over 200 students and community members took part. This event was hosted by Chisapani Agri Cooperative Ltd. and Suanulo ward-level Child Club, in collaboration with Baijanath Rural Municipality and the Area Police Office, Chisapani. Following the rally, a short public gathering and an open quiz competition on gender-based violence were held, with winners receiving awards. At the conclusion of the program, participants, including the Ward Chair and other stakeholders, signed a commitment board pledging to take action against gender-based violence and work towards reducing it in the community.

Inauguration of Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Sensitization Classes

The inauguration program for Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) sensitization classes was held at three schools supported by the NLRP-II program: Janachetana Ma.Vi. in Rajapur-10, Ghusel Secondary School in Ghusel-1, Lalitpur, and Ramkot Secondary School in Lalitpur. The inauguration ceremony was attended by stakeholders, teachers, and students.

These 15-week classes aim to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students, regardless of their gender, gender identity or socio-economic background. Through interactive sessions, discussions, and activities, students will explore topics such as gender stereotypes, discrimination, and the importance of respecting and valuing diversity.

The classes will equip students with the tools to recognize and challenge harmful gender norms and stereotypes, fostering a more inclusive and respectful classroom and school environment for everyone. They will also help students analyze social issues related to gender and diversity, promoting gender equality and social inclusion both within their school and in the wider community. The inauguration program provided an opportunity for stakeholders, teachers, and students to discuss the significance of GEDSI education and its impact on creating a more equitable and just society.

Activities to Enhance Child Development and Strengthen Child Clubs Network

In December, a series of activities were organized to enhance child development skills and strengthen the network of child clubs at the ward and municipal levels.

A total of 87 students from grades 4 and 5 at Bhanu Secondary School in Laljhadi-2, Kanchanpur, participated in a comprehensive handwashing and sanitation program. Interactive sessions and practical demonstrations effectively highlighted the importance of good hygiene practices in disease prevention. The program aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain both personal and community health.

Additionally, regular meetings of child clubs at the ward level are being conducted consistently. These meetings incorporate a diverse range of extracurricular activities, including creative and recreational competitions, fostering holistic child development and active engagement.

NLRP-II Team Conducts Half-Year Review and Planning Meeting for Year 2

The NLRP-II team conducted its Half-Year Review and Planning Meeting for Year 2 from December 12th to 14th, 2024. A total of 40 staff members from central, provincial, and field offices participated in these important reflection and planning sessions.

This meeting was not only about reviewing progress but also served as a valuable learning opportunity for everyone. Staff shared best practices, discussed challenges, and explored new opportunities to enhance the program’s impact. Additionally, the team was oriented on the ‘Climate Smart Village’ initiative, which aims to build resilient and sustainable communities in the face of climate change.

Celebration of the 33rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On December 3rd, the 33rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) was celebrated by Chisapani Agriculture Cooperative Ltd. in collaboration with stakeholders and the concerned body of Baijanath Ward No. 1, Banke. The cooperative honored 18 PWD members from the cooperative during an Interaction and Honor Program, which was attended by a total of 39 participants.

Additionally, the day was marked by an inter-school painting competition held at Kaski, where prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, along with consolation prizes. The competition encouraged creative expression and promoted inclusivity, highlighting the importance of recognizing and celebrating the abilities of all individuals.
